One of the things we are passionate about here at Ravenwood Castle and The Malted Meeple is craft beer. We pride ourselves on having an excellent assortment of craft beers for the enjoyment of our guests. In our monthly blog feature, the Brewer’s Spotlight, we raise our pints to the men and women who dedicate themselves to the brewing craft.
This May we raise our pints to 21st Amendment Brewery, the brainchild of Nico Freccia and Shaun O’Sullivan. Based in San Francisco’s historic South Park neighborhood, the heart of the new city center, 21st Amendment Brewery blends old style community with innovative brewing in their popular brewpub.
Founded in 2000, 21st Amendment is named in celebration of the Constitutional Amendment that lifted Prohibition, allowing small local breweries to once again become a source for neighborhood identity and community.
Both Freccia and O’Sullivan left their previous lives and career paths in pursuit of quality craft beer and a culture that championed it. This led them both to San Francisco, where they met at a summer brewing science course at UC Davis in 1995 and bonded over their shared passion for homebrew.
In researching the history of early 20th century brew houses in their new home of San Francisco, they gained a deeper respect for the vital function of these local watering holes as centers to bring people together and foster the exchange of ideas and build a sense of identity and belonging.
“Like Lady Liberty, we stand for independence and perseverance. In the pursuit of innovative beer, there is no obstacle too great. No journey too long.”
They back this philosophy up with using surprising ingredients like 100% real fruit in their Hell or High Watermelon Wheat Beer and their Blood Orange IPA, and declare the independence with the robust west coast attitude brewed into their most popular beer, the signature Brew Free! Or Die IPA, which balances multiple hop notes with a solid malty bitterness.
Join us, and a representative from 21st Amendment, on May 25th for an evening of innovative flavor creations, classic IPAs, and plenty of games.
Through the month of May, we will be featuring several brews from the folks at 21st Amendment and invite you to come by, grab a seat, and exchange some ideas (and gaming tips) with our active community of your fellow gamers and beer enthusiasts!
