One of the things we like to do here at the Malted Meeple is give some extra attention to our favorite board game publishers and designers. In our monthly Publisher’s Spotlight we provide a bit of background on the publisher, discuss a few of their games, and may even announce a visit to The Meeple by some of the publisher’s representatives!
This month, we are proud to shine the light of our Publisher’s Spotlight on a prestigious member of the Asmodee Family, Space Cowboys!
Based in France, Space Cowboys was founded in 2013 by founders and key players from within Asmodee Games including: Marc Nunes, Phillippe Mouret, and Croc. As the name Space Cowboys suggests, while the company is new, the players are not strangers to the hobby board game industry. After 23 years or so, these major players decided to harken back to their origins by designing and publishing exciting games. Their mission: To explore and design new and exciting games and mechanics. Then bring them back to Earth to share with the expanding hobby market! To accomplish this mission, they enlisted the help of Cyril Demaegd of Ystari Games and Sebastien Pauchan of GameWorks. Space Cowboys focuses on producing both American-style and Euro-style board games and many of their games are designed for the enjoyment of families.
In 2014 Space Cowboys exploded on the scene with their hit game Splendor. This innovative game singlehandedly nabbed an astonishing 6 major awards, including The Meeple’s Choice Award and The Golden Geek Board Game of the Year Award. Splendor was also a nominee for numerous awards including a nomination for the prestigious Spiel Des Jahres. Our sister business, Ravenwood Castle, featured Splendor as their Game of the Month in January of 2015.
The mission of Space Cowboys is to “publish games they find cool.” Many of the games they have produced thus far has been critically acclaimed and well-received. A few of the games they have produced include: Splendor, Elysium, and Time Stories.
We are excited to see what new and exciting projects come from Space Cowboys.
