Brewery Spotlight – Maize Valley

Brewery Spotlight Maize Valley

Our May Brewery Spotlight features Maize Valley, the first craft brewery in Stark County! Since the 1960s, Maize Valley has been family-owned and operated out of Hartville, Ohio. They didn’t always make beer, though. They started from humble beginnings, selling vegetables out of the back of a truck, and eventually expanded into a farmer’s market. Forced to seek additional means of income in the early 2000s with a couple of years that were bad for crops, they pursued wine making and have continued to make wine ever since. Jackie Os

The Malted Meeple is proud to be featuring a southern Ohio brewery this month: Jackie O’s! Jackie O’s owner acquired their current facility, located in Athens, Ohio, in 2005. It was originally O’Hooley’s Brewpub and he changed the name to “Jackie O’s” in honor of his mother. Soon after, they expanded the business and now operate three locations: a brewpub, a bakeshop, and a farm. Jackie O’s is unique in the fact that they are self-sustaining. They maintain their own farm that provides the resources needed for their beer and the food served at their locations. They also own a bakeshop where they recycle grain from the brewing process and make it into pizza dough and bread. You can find their baked goods in multiple…

A History of Beer: How Craft Beer Survived (and Thrived) in America

A History of Beer Blog

The process of brewing beer dates back over 5000 years. It started off similar to what we call “microbreweries” today. Traditionally, specialists (a head brewer!) led the operation and passed their expertise down to trained apprentices. Only local and easily accessible ingredients such as dried flowers, herbs, and tree roots were used in the brewing process. When the Industrial Revolution began in the 1700s, the world quickly began to change, and beer suddenly had the opportunity to become a global industry. New inventions gave brewers insight into the fermentation process, helping them regulate temperature and avoid inconsistencies. Ultimately, these tools made it easier for anyone to try their own hand…
